We at Girovagando spoke some time ago about Puglia as a still rather hidden treasure, especially at the international level...
In the very last years, many seem to have noticed: among the latest, but only in chronological order, the prestigious British Times, who in their Sunday edition describe Puglia as a great investment opportunity: "Less known but therefore cheaper than Tuscany."
"Puglia was for many years a well-kept secret," an exclusive destination for predominantly local tourists and investors. Besides competitive prices, the reasons for such a judgment are to be found in a series of uncontaminated coves, "crystal-clear beaches," and a very rich red land where "silver olive trees" reign supreme, as the Sunday Times itself defines them.
"From Great Britain, requests for information about Puglian houses on the Italian real estate portal Gate-Away.com have increased significantly and in this ranking Puglia has surpassed Liguria, placing second after Tuscany." A stone masseria can cost from 1.5 to 10 million, with an average about 20-25% lower than Tuscany and Umbria.
In reality, we know well both the strengths and weaknesses of our land... and we don't mince words. As we have often denounced on these pages, among the main reasons why foreign investors have often stayed away from Italy, especially the South, there is a high rate of corruption that makes our country the last in Europe, even behind Greece and Romania, accompanied by a very poor standard of public services compared to other parts of Europe, even in the same Mediterranean area.
A decisive change of direction is desirable to enhance our enviable treasures, not only to "export" them abroad and create a virtuous economic chain, but to start fully benefiting from them ourselves, Pugliesi and Italians firsthand.
